TIRUPATI: Despite the party’s electoral debacle, Prajarajyam chief Chiranjeevi tried to put up a brave front attributing the victory of Congress
in the state to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s “clean image” as the people wanted a stable government both at the Centre and in the state.

The PRP supremo, who won from the Tirupati assembly seat, stopped short of giving credit to chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and his development mantra for the Congress victory. Addressing mediapersons in Tirupati on Friday, he said the people voted for Manmohan’s credibility and country’s stability.

Faulting YSR for not pushing for more cabinet berths at the Centre, he said:

“In spite of Congress winning 33 Lok Sabha seats in AP, the state was not given due representation in the Union cabinet which is a shame not only for the Congress but to the entire state.”

He said both Tamilnadu and Karnataka bagged a maximum number of cabinet posts despite Congress’s relative poor shows in the two states. “The state Congress should have pursued the matter aggressively. Without central cabinet posts how is development possible?” he questioned.

He said he never claimed that he would be a `king’ or `kingmaker’ before the elections. “People are the ultimate kings. I respect their judgement,” he said. Notwithstanding the drubbing, he said the PRP has made a “great beginning” in the political arena as it has bagged 15 per cent of votes in the recent elections.

Reacting sharply to TDP’s comment that PRP had played a spoilsport in splitting the TDP’s positive votes, he said: “What happened to their much hyped cash transfer and free colour TV schemes? The public are not fools to believe such unimplementable schemes.”

He had a word of advice for TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu as well. “First the TDP should learn how to accept defeat in a graceful manner. After all, it is the verdict of the people and you cannot blame them,” he felt.

The Tirupati MLA said he would visit the temple town once in every 40 days and spend a couple of days with the electorate to solve their problems.
